Whenever you add a friend onFacebook, you start seeing some of that friend's updates in your News Feed. And depending on the friend, what you see about him might be perfect. But that "depending on" is a pretty big "depending." You might like one friend's statuses but hate seeing photos of her baby all the time.
You might feel like someone else isposting way too often and your News Feed is cluttered with his constant status updates. Or you might want to make sure you don't miss a single thing your best friend does. You can actually control these settings from a friend's Timeline.
To adjust News Feed settings for a friend, follow these steps:
Go to her Timeline.
You can get there using Search or by clicking her name anywhere you see it around the site. Once you're on your friend's Timeline, look for the button on her cover photo that says Friends.
Click the Friends button.
A menu of options appears. By default, the Show in News Feed option is selected. You can remove your friend from News Feed entirely by selecting Show in News Feed, which will remove the check mark. Assuming you want to see something from your friend, though, proceed to Step 3.
Select Settings from the menu.
The News Feed settings menu appears, asking which updates you want to see from that person. You can control what you see by both quantity and type.
Decide how much you want to see from your friend.
You can choose to see
All Updates: All updates really does mean everything, so if your friend is particularly active on Facebook, your News Feed may be overrun with her stories.
Most Updates: Most friends are set to Most Updates by default. This means News Feed determines which stories from this person to show you.
Only Important: Important updates are really the big things: an engagement or kid, or maybe a post that seems to be getting a lot of attention from other friends. If you want to see drastically less of a person, this usually does the trick, without the danger of you missing any big news.
Decide whether there are any types of stories you particularly want to see.
The bottom part of the News Feed settings menu shows types of stories that appear in News Feed. By default, all types are selected, because News Feed assumes you like variety. Select any story type to remove the check mark next to it.
On Facebook, everyone has the option to turn on following for his posts. This means that followers can receive that person's public posts in their News Feed without becoming friends. It is a settings that's handy for public figures and people who might want to share some things very broadly and other things more privately.
Most people don't allow following, which is why when you go to someone's Timeline, you just see a button to add her as a friend. If someone allows followers, you will see an additional button that says Follow. Click that button to start getting that person's posts in your News Feed.
After you're following someone, you can edit News Feed settings for him just as though he were any other friend. Navigate to his Timeline, click the Following button, and select Settings from the menu that appears. Make your choices about quantity and type of posts you want to see.
Additionally, when you like a Page, you automatically start following its posts. Unlike following a regular Timeline, you either get updates from Pages or you don't. From a Page's Timeline, hover over the Liked button to bring up a menu of options. By default, the Show in News Feed option is checked. Select it again to uncheck it and prevent stories from that Page from appearing in your News Feed.
