How to Use the Facebook Group Share Box

Posting to the Facebook group works the same way as posting from a Timeline or the News Feed. There is a Share box at the top of the Recent Posts section of the page. A few sections of the Share box appear for groups that don't appear on Timelines or in News Feeds: Ask Question and Add File.

The important thing to remember is that when you share something from a group, you're sharing it only with the members of that group. And if you're a member of a group, you also need to remember that you may not be friends with everyone in the group. In a big group, you may actually be sharing with many people who typically couldn't see the things you post.

Although the Share box works almost the same way across Facebook, all the options are briefly explained here within the context of groups.

Write a Group Post

Posts are basically like status updates that you share only with the members of a group (unless the group is open, in which case anyone can see your post). You might post an update just to say "Hi" or to start a discussion with group members. To write a post, follow these steps:

  1. Click in the Share box (where it says Write Something at the top of the group page).

After you click in the box, the Post button appears below the text box along with buttons to indicate where you are and which other Facebook members are with you.

  2. Type whatever you want to say in the box.

For the Dummies group, this might be something like "What do people think of the new groups?" or "Does anyone know how I can start group chat?" You can also post a link to a relevant article or website in this space.

  3. (Optional) Add location information or tags to the post.

Clicking the person icon in the lower-left corner of the Share box allows you to add a tag to others when you write a post. Clicking the location icon allows you to add information about where you are when you write the post.

  4. Click Post.

Your post appears in the group, and group members may see it in their notifications and News Feeds.

If you want to share a link, usually some sort of article, video, or other online content that you want the group to see, simply type or paste the complete link to whatever you want to share, along with your thoughts or opinions, in the Share box.

How to Add a Photo/Video

Sometimes, writing a post won't do for the current circumstances. A picture can be worth a thousand words To post a photo to a group, follow these steps:

  1. Click Add Photo/Video at the top of the Share box at the top of the group page.

    The photo options appear.

  2. Decide whether you want to upload photos or a video or create an entirely new album.

Clicking either option expands an interface for selecting photos from your computer's hard drive. When you choose to upload photos, thumbnails are displayed in the Share box, and you can write one post to describe the collection of photos. When you choose to create an album, you're taken to the Create Photo Album interface, where you can add tags and captions to individual photos.

  3. Click Post.

The post appears in the group, and all members (depending on notification settings) are notified about your post. They can thencomment and like what you're sharing.

If you want to upload a video, choose Upload Photos/Video and then select the video file from your computer's hard drive.

How to ask a Group Question

One of the added features of Groups is the Ask Question feature. Questions allow group members to gather information in a more efficient way than using a post and sorting through the comments for the answers. The Ask Question feature mostly works by creating a poll that members can vote on from the Recent Posts section of the group. To ask a question and poll your group, follow these steps:

  1. Click Ask Question in the Share box at the top of the group page.

  2. Type your question in the Ask Something box.

  3. Click the Add Poll Options link beneath the text box.

    This expands the poll options.

  4. Type your first option into the first Add an Option section.

  5. Add more options until you're finished.

Facebook keeps adding more boxes as you fill up these first few, so just stop when you're ready.

  6. Choose whether people can add more options.

The Allow Anyone to Add Options check box controls this setting. Allowing this options means people can add more answers to a poll. For example, if before people could choose only Dog or Cat, group members may be able to add Hedgehog as an option. Depending on how big your group is, this choice may or may not be significant.

  7. Click Post.

The question then appears in the group and in members' notifications and News Feeds. They will be able to vote, like, or comment on the question.

How to add a Group File

Adding files is part of the Files and Docs feature of groups. If you're part of a group that has real-world things to accomplish — for example, a wedding welcome letter to create with your family — you can add files to help you collaborate on these documents. From the Share box, you can upload files from your computer or, if you use Dropbox, from your Dropbox.
