How to Edit Your Facebook Smart Lists

Smart Lists are the lists thatFacebook makes on your behalf. These lists are created automatically based on your interactions with your friends and shared characteristics of your friends. Here are some common Smart Lists:

  • Close Friends: Facebook creates this list based on things like people you interact with a lot on Facebook, people you appear in a lot of photos with, and so on.

  • Acquaintances: The opposite of the Close Friends list. This list is meant to be a place where you can cordon off the people you don't know as well. In fact, one of the default privacy options when you post something from the Share box is Friends Except Acquaintances, which is Facebook's way of saying, "Share this with my real friends only."

  • Restricted: This list is for people you want to add as friends but don't want to see posts that are visible to friends. In other words, people on this list see only posts that you choose to make public.

  • Family: Based on information you've entered about your family, they may show up on this Smart List.

  • <Your High School>If you've caught up with a lot of old friends on Facebook, a Smart List might be created so you can post photos from the reunion or share memories just with them.

  • <Your college/university/workplace>:Similar to a high school list, depending on the information your friends have listed on their profiles, additional Smart Lists may be created for these groups.

Although Facebook is smart, it's not perfect. Although these lists will be mostly accurate, you may find that you have to do some editing to them. The accuracy of the lists may also depend on how you want to use your lists.

For example, you may want your Family list to make it easy to share with just your immediate family and, therefore, need to remove the more distant members. Or you want it to be a giant family reunion all the time, in which case, you need to add some of the third and fourth cousins once removed to the mix.

To edit a Smart List, follow these steps:

  1. From the Home page, look on the right side of the page for the News Feed menu.

  2. Click the down arrow to expand the News Feed menu once and then click the See All link at the bottom of the menu to expand it even further.

All your lists appear, along with links to categories of News Feeds you can look at, such as Music and Photos.

  3. Click the list you want to edit.

Doing so takes you to that list's News Feed. On the right side of the page is an On This List section, where you can check out the current members of the list.

  4. To add people to a list, type their names in the text box in the On This List section.

Facebook autocompletes as you type. Select your friends' names when you see them.

  5. To remove people from a list, click Edit in the upper-right corner of the On This List section.

A menu appears with options for changing what you see in this view.

  6. Click Add/Remove.

A pop-up window displays the names and pictures of all members of the list.

  7. Hover over the person you want to remove.

A small X should appear in the upper-right corner of the person's picture.

  8. Click the X.

Repeat Steps 7 and 8 for each person you want to remove.

  9. Click the Finish button when you're done.

You can edit who is on a Smart List at any point in time.
